MARK GRAY
Recruitment Director
Clean Water Action Rhode Island
• Canvassing at an organization like Mark's is a great way to get a career in politics or environmental policy off of the ground.
• Become tenacious: working in environmental advocacy is often a test of communication skill. With proper motivation there is opportunity for rapid advancement.
• Are you a people person? People who excel at canvassing have developed the strong communications and leadership skills that will translate to many people-driven green jobs.
Mark Gray maintains a recruitment presence for Clean Water Action on several fronts, including online visibility, university campus visits, and Earth Day events. Clean Water Action has worked in the Providence area for 20 years and canvasses year-round to educate the public on both local and national initiatives. A current campaign in Rhode Island pushes for producer responsibility legislation, which would hold manufacturers responsible for recycling and disposal of waste material, offer incentives to green their processes, and mandate certain toxic substances be replaced with natural alternatives, when possible.

"I would say there's a thriving environmental community," Mark says of Providence. Local environmental leaders include the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, the Conservation Law Society, Ocean State Action, and the Environmental Justice League. Clean Water Action also partners with local institutions such as Rhode Island College, Providence College, and Brown University. The strength of the local environmental community makes Providence an excellent career location for environmental professionals.
PRISCILLA DE LA CRUZ
Marketing Director
People's Power And Light
• Network as a volunteer: People's Power and Light accepts volunteers, which offers exposure to other green energy non-profits and companies in the area.
• Keep an eye out for similar organizations: I was just at a conference where people in New Jersey and New York showed interest in People's Power and Light's organizational model.
• Skill sets: Working with community groups helps develop public education and advocacy skills. Organizations like People's Power and Light look for outreach experience and a strong communications background.
With the importance of supporting renewable energy alternatives growing in the public consciousness, People's Power & Light provides advocacy, education, and alternative energy buy-in programs that have proven successful in creating a tipping point for the people of Rhode Island. Marketing Manager Priscilla De La Cruz lists membership between People's Power & Light's Rhode Island and Massachusetts members at 23,000. Among their programs, the New England GreenStart program serves 8,000 of their members. Through electric utility National Grid's green power choice program, People's Power & Light offers New England GreenStart as an on-bill green power product. For members, New England GreenStart matches a member's monthly energy usage with renewable energy sources, featuring community-organized wind sources. Other sources include solar, small-hydro from environmentally friendly dams, and landfill gas.

For members not in National Grid territory, the New England Wind Fund offers renewable energy certificates, which members purchase to offset their monthly energy usage from fossil fuels, or one time events or gifts. People's Power & Light helps people understand how this relationship between the utility and communities works by organizing educational visits to local wind turbines. A number of new wind turbines are in development in Rhode Island, which has potential for industry growth in both offshore and land-based wind. People's Power & Light is located at the Gordon Avenue Business Incubator.
ROB SISSON
President
Republicans For Environmental Protection
• Working as a staffer in a political organization is a good place to get into environmental politics.
• All members of congress employ an environmental legislative assistant.
• You can work on sustainability inside corporations. Look for positions as Corporate Responsibility Officers or Sustainability Officers.
Republicans for Environmental Protection is an organization dedicate to restoring the GOP's great conservation legacy. Rob cites several environmental Republican presidents who established milestones in our nation. Abraham Lincoln protected Yosemite. Ulysses S. Grant created Yellowstone, the first national park. Theodore Roosevelt championed conservation by designating 150 National Forests and five national parks. Even conservative icon Ronald Reagan ratified the Montreal Protocol to protect the Ozone Layer. Rob's expertise is in Republican environmental politics but his advice could just as easily translate to the Democratic Party. While any college major can lead to a career in politics, law degrees are very common and any classes in environmental science would also be helpful. Look for entry level positions as political staffers, at think tanks, or in foundations.
MICA ODOM
National Energy Media Director
Environmental Defense Fund
• Mica attended Columbia Business School and concentrated in Social Enterprise. Look to Ivy League MBA programs for business training in sustainable energy.
• Internships, even unpaid, or other networking opportunities are the key to getting your foot in the door in green and environmental industries.
• MBA and business students should look to Net Impact for networking opportunities in green and environmental industries. Net Impact has chapters on most campuses in many cities, and the web site includes a jobs page.
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading national nonprofit organization, creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships. As National Energy Media Director for the Environmental Defense Fund, Mica Odom has insight into career success in green marketing. Mica points to the success of past EDF campaigns such as the 2007 landmark deal that canceled eight coal-fired power plants proposed in Texas and adopted an unprecedented set of environmental initiatives, preventing 57 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Mica's career highlights the importance of business skills in the green and environmental industry. MBA programs in both the Ivy League and state schools are offering innovative programs that highlight green and environmental business training. The economic push from MBA students trained in sustainable business models is currently demonstrating the viability of green career fields such as engineering, green building, renewable energy finance, green marketing, and philanthropic foundations with an environmental focus.
