ROB SISSON
President
Republicans For Environmental Protection
• Working as a staffer in a political organization is a good place to get into environmental politics.
• All members of congress employ an environmental legislative assistant.
• You can work on sustainability inside corporations. Look for positions as Corporate Responsibility Officers or Sustainability Officers.
Republicans for Environmental Protection is an organization dedicate to restoring the GOP's great conservation legacy. Rob cites several environmental Republican presidents who established milestones in our nation. Abraham Lincoln protected Yosemite. Ulysses S. Grant created Yellowstone, the first national park. Theodore Roosevelt championed conservation by designating 150 National Forests and five national parks. Even conservative icon Ronald Reagan ratified the Montreal Protocol to protect the Ozone Layer. Rob's expertise is in Republican environmental politics but his advice could just as easily translate to the Democratic Party. While any college major can lead to a career in politics, law degrees are very common and any classes in environmental science would also be helpful. Look for entry level positions as political staffers, at think tanks, or in foundations.
MICA ODOM
National Energy Media Director
Environmental Defense Fund
• Mica attended Columbia Business School and concentrated in Social Enterprise. Look to Ivy League MBA programs for business training in sustainable energy.
• Internships, even unpaid, or other networking opportunities are the key to getting your foot in the door in green and environmental industries.
• MBA and business students should look to Net Impact for networking opportunities in green and environmental industries. Net Impact has chapters on most campuses in many cities, and the web site includes a jobs page.
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading national nonprofit organization, creates transformational solutions to the most serious environmental problems. EDF links science, economics, law, and innovative private-sector partnerships. As National Energy Media Director for the Environmental Defense Fund, Mica Odom has insight into career success in green marketing. Mica points to the success of past EDF campaigns such as the 2007 landmark deal that canceled eight coal-fired power plants proposed in Texas and adopted an unprecedented set of environmental initiatives, preventing 57 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

Mica's career highlights the importance of business skills in the green and environmental industry. MBA programs in both the Ivy League and state schools are offering innovative programs that highlight green and environmental business training. The economic push from MBA students trained in sustainable business models is currently demonstrating the viability of green career fields such as engineering, green building, renewable energy finance, green marketing, and philanthropic foundations with an environmental focus.
ANITA KNOWLES
President
Greenways Foundation
• Biofuels may be the future of green energy in agricultural states like Indiana. Indiana Senator Dick Lugar recently introduced the Dual Fuel Vehicles Bill.
• Indianapolis has a national reputation for its popular bike trails. The Monon trail in Indianapolis has an estimated 1.3 million visitors per year. Look to considerable growth in the green commuting industry in the near future in Indianapolis.
Conservative mid-western cities don't often create popular green transportation programs. That is why it is surprising to find that Indianapolis, Indiana has one of the most popular bike trails anywhere in the United States.

The Monon trail, which runs through large sections of the city and suburbs, has an estimated 1.3 million visitors a year and has spawned trail building and bike culture across central Indiana.

Greenways Foundation is a charitable trust working to "promote the growth, enhancement, and use of Indiana greenways," such as the Monon trail. Anita Knowles, president of Greenways Foundation, predicts a bright future for bike transportation in Indiana.

Anita's organization is currently working to achieve the Indiana Trails Vision, a program designed to put a trail within 15 minutes of every Indiana Resident. With the success of the Monon trail and the support of groups like Greenways Foundation, Indiana is developing into a Midwestern leader for environmentally friendly bike transportation.

Anita also mentioned biofuels as a possible growth industry in the state. As political leaders in a corn and soybean producing state Governor Mitch Daniels, Lt. Governor Becky Silverman, and Senator Dick Lugar are natural proponents of biofuel and have been enthusiastic promoters of the industry. Indiana recently expanded production to 12 ethanol plants and could experience significant growth in the biofuel industry.
ANGELA SMITH JONES
Director Of Public Of Policy
Indianapolis Chamber Of Commerce
• Look to the Chamber of Commerce for green networking opportunities. The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce hosts meetings where companies share what they have done to improve their environmental and sustainability policies.
• Check out the Farmers Market. Indianapolis hosts the Indy Winter Farmers Market that connects local food producers with urban consumers.
• Indiana has wind power! The wind energy industry has established a presence in several areas of Indiana, with wind farms being built across the state, including the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm in the West Lafayette region.
The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce actively promotes green and environmentally friendly business. The goal of the Chamber's Green Business Initiative is to "promote the interest of businesses that are committed and engaged in environmentally responsible operations and practices." Angela Smith Jones, Director of Public Policy, highlighted the work that the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce does to educate local businesses about greening their products and services. The Chamber hosts two to four events a year, at which a local company that has successfully implemented green policies educates chamber members on their success.
JEFF CHITWOOD
Chief Estimator
Bybee Stone Company
• College majors such as architecture, structural engineering, and construction management provide a good background for work in the limestone construction industry.
• Limestone is quarried, so an understanding of geology would also help.
• The US Green Building Council is working with architecture schools to improve existing programs. Ask about the US Green Building Council's participation in any program that you are considering.
Limestone construction is hardly a new industry, but it may have a claim to the title of most sustainable green industry. Some limestone buildings in England have stood for a remarkable 500 years, according to Jeff Chitwood of Bybee Stone Construction.

In addition, limestone provides insulation that can improve a structure's energy efficiency in both summer and winter. Indiana is known for its limestone deposits, and Indiana students should consider a job in this green Industry.

Green construction with limestone appears to have a bright future, even in a down construction market. Most universities and many municipalities require the LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) certified construction qualification that can be obtained through limestone construction.

In addition, Limestone has a reputation as a timeless building material perfect for both modern and classic architecture. With the widely reported problems in construction durability that have begun to surface with the real estate bubble, expect growth in the green limestone construction industry to continue in southern Indiana.
