Today, Bergey sells and manufactures wind turbines that are used around the world, including such far flung markets as Kenya, Romania, and Fiji.
Membership Coordinator
Utah Environmental Congress
• Volunteering in an environmental advocacy organization is a great place to get your foot in the door.
• Formal education for organizing helps, but organizing is best learned by doing it. Learn by doing. You'll make mistakes, but that's okay because you learn from them.
• With the low pay and instability of environmental advocacy positions, make sure you have the dedication that is required to enter this field.
With 30 years of experience in the field of peace, social justice and environmental advocacy, Bob Bristol speaks from first-hand knowledge. Bob says wolves are a major environmental topic of the moment in Utah. Environmental activists like Bob are working hard to bring them back to the state over the objection of most Utah politicians and some in the ranching and hunting communities. The Campaign to Recover Wolves in Utah is a multi organization initiative championed by a network of scientists, wolf advocates, and community outreach organizers. This coalition seeks to allow wolves back onto public lands in an effort to re-balance the ecosystem with a top predator.

In his position as Membership Coordinator, Bob Brister's community outreach includes publishing a newsletter, running pro-wolf postcard campaigns, and tabling (staffing a booth at events with publications and information). Bob sees renewable energy as the future of the job growth in Utah. Utah is a major producer of fossil fuels such as coal and natural gas, while it's climate and sunshine would make it ideal for solar energy. Bob would prefer this to take the form of rooftop solar panels as opposed to larger industrial grade power plants on public lands.

HEAL ( Healthy Environmental Alliance Of Utah)
• Get training at Green Corps. This organization trains college students to develop environmental campaigns.
• Classes in economics, communications, and analytical sciences are valuable for students seeking positions in an advocacy organization like HEAL Utah.
• The same things that make you valuable in the private sector make you valuable to a non-profit. Non-profit organizations need people with skills in office software, information technology, web programming, and social media.
HEAL Utah works to address the unique environmental health and safety needs of the state of Utah. As Clean Energy Analyst at HEAL, Arthur Morris has insight into most of the green and environmental issues facing Utah. Arthur works on clean energy initiatives that address some issues that are common in many states. However, nuclear power, mining, and waste are more pressing in Utah than most other places. Not only is a significant amount of uranium mined there, but Utah has been used as a dumping ground for nuclear waste from other states.

Center For A Sustainable Future
• Organic farms offer volunteer positions, and can be good places to learn renewable agriculture.
• Iowa State University has a great educational resource: The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State is a great place to learn about the newest advances in sustainable agriculture.
• Another excellent resource, The Stone Barn Center, (north of Manhattan) is a non-profit education center and farm. They offer education for sustainable agriculture.
The Center for a Livable Future (CLF) at John's Hopkins university works in research, educational outreach, and community action targeted at "farming, eating, and living for our future." As Communication Manager for the CLF, Chris Stevens works daily in support of these goals.

Sustainable, or resilient, farming has recently gained exposure with the continued environmental and health problems associated with factory farming. In essence, much of sustainable farming is really a "return to traditional farming," Chris explained. In traditional, or sustainable, farming, animals are not raised in a factory environment in very confined spaces and large amounts of dangerous antibiotics and pesticides are avoided.
